ARJ21项目是中国首次按照与国际接轨的适航标准进行研制，目前国内唯一申请运输类飞机适航标准型号合格证、得到美国联邦航空局受理的飞机项目，研制过程受国家民用航空局适航标准的监督。
飞机的研制采取以我为主、开展国际合作的模式，采用了大量国际成熟先进技术和机载系统，其适应性、舒适性和经济性指标在全球支线飞机中居于领先地位，飞行速度与干线大飞机相当。
ARJ21成为中国第一个外销欧美发达国家的飞机产品，目前国内外订单已达208架。其中，美国最大飞机租赁公司通用电气商业服务公司订购了25架。
